Carseat Tent Tutorial

Alright. I made this for a friend and now I am totally wishing I had a kid in bucket carseat so I could make one for myself. This was not hard at all and is easily a 1 1/2 hour project (or less!).

Here's what you need:
2- pieces of fabric 35" x 44" (I used cotton for the top and flannel for the underside. It's cold out there!)
4- strips of fabric 2"x 8" (I used the same pattern as the top cotton, but you could totally go for coordinating fabric)
2- 2" pieces of Velcro
coordinating thread
disappearing marker

1. Sew your two fabrics right sides together, leaving about a 7" gap

2. Clip your corners and turn you fabric right side out. Press.

3. Sew all around your blanket. I also typically sew an extra line closer to the edge to really secure that opening.

4. Figure out where those straps are going to go. To do this I placed the blanket on my carseat and felt around for where I wanted them to be. Mark this with with your marker. Mine ended being about 9" apart, but carseats vary so much.

5. Sew two strips right sides together, leaving one end open for turning. Repeat for the other strap. Clip your corners. Turn and press, making sure that you press the opening to the inside.

6. Sew all along the outside of your straps.

7. Sew your Velcro on each strap about a 1/2 inch from the ends. Be sure to sew the corresponding Velcro piece to the opposite side of the strap.

8. Mark your strap where you will be sewing. I drew two lines about 2" apart. Place your strap on your blanket. Pin and sew.

9. Attach to your carseat and admire. Apparently my friend's carseat is black, white and red, so this is going to look so fun with her carseat.

Please comment if you have any questions at all. I would be glad to clarify any of the details if necessary. Oh, and please let me know if this tutorial is useful to you. I look forward to doing more tutorials. I have a few in the works right now;)

Thats so cool. And I thought I was clever because I stuck velcro to a blanket and to the top of the seat. This is way better ! wish I would have seen this last year.

On one pretty thing... Woohoo! I love this so much. I saw it on your blog before your guy even brought it over. You are an awesome friend for making this for us. I appreciate it so much. I love it. I love how it looks with my carseat. And Baby Noah loves it too. Thanks again!

I was just wondering, do you pre-wash the fabric? I want to do this but I wasn't sure how the mix of flannel and cotton would do- I know nothing about this sort of thing!

If you are using a fabric that has an obvious orientation, you may very well need 1.5 yards so that the pattern is not crossing your car seat the wrong way :( Lesson learned the hard way.

Thanks for the tip, Kerry!! Add I'm sorry about the 'oops'. Is it for a girl?? If so, perhaps you can add a fun ruffle to the sides in order to lengthen it. If its a boy...then perhaps a pleated, pressed ruffle. Or even just some coordinating fabric sewn on each side. I hope it ends up working for you!

I added some straps and some boning to one side so that it doubles as a nursing cover. Best thing in the whole world! Thank you so much for this tutorial.

I have 3 grandbabies coming (3 singles Dec. - Mar.) so I am sewing up a storm. Each of them will need one of these carrier covers! Thank you for sharing your tutorial.
